An SGP (Student Growth Progression) percentage represents how students’ progress or improvement compare to others with similar past test scores (their academic peers). It tells us how much their improvement or progression from year-to-year, which helps us identify students who may require extra support.
SGPs are calculated using a statistical technique called quantile regression, which compares previous test scores with current assessment scores to find patterns which predict future performance. Quantile regression is widely used as a means of evaluating student learning in Massachusetts public schools; its calculations can be complex but nonetheless provide a useful framework for tracking progress across schools and comparing outcomes among them. SGPs differ from traditional student assessments in that they measure progress over time, using state assessments and any additional assessments taken during that same timeframe. Being percentages, SGPs are easy to interpret and compare over time. They also help us fairly compare students who enter school at various levels while working toward similar standards.
Students whose SGP scores fall above the 85th percentile have made notable academic advancements, while those whose SGP falls between 50th and 95th percentile have made satisfactory academic gains.
