The Hong Kong Prize was created to recognize outstanding scientific research performed by scientists from Hong Kong. With this goal in mind, its aim is to attract global top science talent while developing forward-looking researchers within Hong Kong itself and creating an international innovation and technology hub. At its heart is the Board, responsible for interpreting THE PRIZE Charter’s articles; suggesting important scientific fields for review; appointing members of Review Committee and Compliance Oversight Team; setting requirements on nominating experts; verifying and approving final review results before finally organizing its awards ceremonies.
At this year’s Newspaper Society of Hong Kong News Awards, The South China Morning Post won 12 prizes, with senior reporter Edith Lin and News Editor Jeffie Lam being awarded first and third places respectively for their investigations of unauthorised structures built on luxury properties respectively, while Production Editor Matt Haldane landed third spot for his series of stories about city’s scientific sector players.
Other winners included the Hong Kong Phil’s recording of Wagner’s Ring Cycle, which won Best Classical Recording of the Year; Hong Kong police thriller Port of Call won the award for Best Feature Film; while a documentary on protester Chan Chun self-immolation won Best Short Documentary.
Prize Board representatives stated that all submissions would be examined for technical or scientific merit, transformation of achievements and creation of social or economic value. If any violations to THE PRIZE terms and conditions occur, its award would be suspended or revoked, according to their spokesperson.
Prizes will be distributed for each of the four zones at an award ceremony featuring representatives from The Hong Kong Alliance of Technology and Innovation, government agencies, sponsoring enterprise and various celebrities as officiators. Winners will also be showcased at an exhibition at Science Museum.
