Sidney Prize stands against technology to halt short attention spans and condense words – offering prizes that honor some of the most accomplished long form writing and thought processes. Visit one of our prize pages to learn more!
Professor Sidney Thomas was an esteemed scholar of medieval art history. This prize honors his memory by awarding annually to the best undergraduate paper written during a calendar year containing original research not previously published and must have not previously won one of any competitions or been previously published elsewhere. Winners receive $100 in cash prize, along with having their paper published in Wittenberg East Asian Studies Journal.
Supported by the Malcolm Robertson Foundation and named for Neilma Gantner (deceased), this award is open to writers of all stages across Australia and internationally, at any stage in their writing careers. The 2024 Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize seeks outstanding short fiction themed around travel; imaginative, creative and literary interpretations are encouraged. The winning writer will receive $5000 as well as publishing their story in Overland magazine while two runners-up each will receive $750 prize money.
Each month, Overland magazine organises and awards the Sidney Prize to an exceptional piece of journalism that exposes social and economic injustices. Nominations for this prize can be submitted either for your own work or someone else’s published within the preceding month – please note however, only articles published prior to being nominated qualify as eligible entries.
All entries will be evaluated by our panel of judges, who will select a shortlist and then announce winners on our website. We would like to extend our thanks and appreciation for their time and involvement throughout this process to Patrick Lenton, Alice Bishop and Sara Saleh – our judges for this contest.
As well as the main prize, there are also numerous runner-up awards in various categories. The Event Cinemas Rising Talent Award acknowledges an emerging film creative from NSW working in short films with a cash prize of $7,000. It is open to filmmakers, directors and screenwriters with no more than five short film credits who wish to apply.
The Sidney Hillman Foundation offers various monetary prizes designed to encourage people to step back and look at the big picture. At this time of political upheaval, its prizes may provide a timely reminder to think broadly about historical events and current policies – particularly the Sidney Hillman Prize for Journalism In Service to the Common Good that has been presented annually since 1946.
One such award is the Sidney Prize for History, presented to an advanced graduate student or recent PhD for producing a book-length manuscript in religious history that makes an important contribution to both their field and general understanding of Christianity. Additionally, The foundation also awards monthly Hillman Prizes for Investigative Journalism In Service Of The Common Good as well as SEIU Prizes For Reporting Racial & Economic Justice.
