The Sydney Prize Honors Outstanding Journalism at Dartmouth College

2024 Sydney Prize honorees have dedicated themselves to building a better world through work, activism or dedication to justice issues. The City of Sydney stands by these exceptional leaders who channel outrage into action.

The Sydney Prize recognizes excellence in journalism that exposes social and economic injustice. Nominations for this prize must be submitted on or before the last day of every month; winners will be announced the second Wednesday afterward.

This award recognizes work that best fulfills Sidney Cox’s standards of originality and integrity as set out in his teaching and book, Indirections for Those Who Want to Write. All forms of undergraduate writing in English may be submitted, with one Hanover member judge per manuscript in future years.

In the interim, the Committee is seeking donations from friends of Sidney Cox who would like to assist in creating this fund on a lasting basis. Letters have been sent out, yet other contributions from friends of Sidney or those interested in arts at Dartmouth are welcome as well. Checks should be payable to Dartmouth College.

This annual award honors Sydney Hook, an esteemed American scholar and leader in liberal arts education. It recognizes an individual from Phi Beta Kappa who has made notable achievements in scholarship, undergraduate teaching and leadership on behalf of liberal arts education. Nominations should be submitted one and a half years prior to Triennial Council Meeting for consideration; then at Triennial Council Meeting itself and in Key Reporter and AJL General Newsletter the winner will be honored and celebrated.

Prize awarded annually to articles published based on dissertations in the past year that further research in Consumer Culture Theory (CCT). Winner receives $1500; an honorable mention may also be possible.

Beginning a New Year is celebrated in two ways: Rosh Hashanah and Lunar New Year. This heartwarming picture book follows one family as they mark these important days through beautiful illustrations that portray both events – with detailed paper cutting traditions.

Established in 2000 in honor of Sidney E. Iwanter (B.A. ’71, History), this prize honors Iwanter’s curiosity and desire to pass along knowledge from one generation to the next. It recognizes an alumnus who exemplifies Iwanter’s spirit and dedication to public service through legal advocacy on behalf of those without money or power, the defense of civil liberties and human rights, poverty alleviation efforts or protecting global environments.
